If you have been trying to find out how to create a professional online course for free then you have come to the right place. I am going to show you exactly how to do this – and it is sooooo easy too.

Creating an online course is a daunting task. You have to first make sure that people are likely going to want to buy the course you put your heart and soul into creating.  You have to know if it is worth your time and effort creating the online course and this in itself can be a challenge

Note –This post includes affiliate links for Thinkific. If you make a purchase through  any of the links on this post I’ll earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It helps us support the running of this website and continue to publish helpful content. I use Thinkific for my own business, which is why I’m happily an affiliate! Thank you all for your support!

This amazing resource I am going to be sharing with you today is not only going to let you create your online course, but it is going to let you create a mini version of it so that you can test the water before committing yourself to the complete version.

The resource is Thinkific. I have been telling my business clients about them for ages and you can read my review here.

How Do I Create a Free Online Course On Thinkific?

First you are going to need to create a free account. You will see their home page which looks like this…

Just enter the email that you want to register with them and click the “Get Started Free” button.

You will then be taken to the registration page which you will need to complete with your details. it looks like this …

Once your account has been activated, which takes just a few minutes usually, you will be able to access your dashboard and start creating your sample course.

Here is the home dashboard.

You will see that it looks not dis-similar to a WordPress dashboard. Everything you need to manage your site is on the left hand side.

I would have a look at each of the menu options in turn to see all the things that you can now do with your Thinkific site.

The first option “Design Your Site” lets you choose the images and text that you want your students to be able to see if they land on your home page.

Manage learning content is where you will spend most of your time. This is where you create your online course. Here is what it looks like when you click on it

Courses is where you are going to want to go to create your online course. Click on it and you will be taken to the page where you begin to create your course. It looks like this…

As you can see, your courses get stored here as you create and publish them but you also create new courses here too by just clicking where it says create new course – see I told you it was easy.

Once you click on create new course you will be presented with a series of templates for you to choose from like the ones below…

You can have a look at each one of these and see which one is best for you. Personally, I like to choose the blank one and create my own course to my own specific requirements. We will use the blank one for this demonstration.

You will then be asked to name your course like this

Call it something that you will remember as the more courses you create (and I guarantee you won’t stop at one) the easier it is to get confused as to which one is which. Perhaps if it is your trial course you could call it something like Mentoring Programme Trial course or Mentoring Mini Course.

Like it says, you can always change it later if you want or need to . Once you enter your course name and click on create course, you will be taken to the page where you actually start creating it 🙂

You will now be shown a demonstration video on how to go about building your course in the Let’s build your course window. It’s a bit quick so you may need to watch it a few times to get the hang of it but in a nutshell this is what you need to do…

  1. Build your curriculum – the series of chapters that you are going to take your students through. Just click on add chapter you will then be prompted to name your chapter as here… Just add your title where is says My Chapter. Then click on save changes.Image of thinkifics name your chapter form
  2. You then need to add the content to the chapter. This could be a presentation, a pdf for a worksheet, a video tutorial or just some text. Once you click on add content then you will see this window open Image o thinkifics add content window
  3. Click on the appropriate icon to add content that you want included in your online course. Upload the content and then add another piece of content until you are happy that your Chapter, Module or whatever you have called it is full.
  4. Repeat these steps until you have created the chapters that you want to include in your mini online course so that you can trial it with your potential customers.

Now that you have created your first online course for free you can go into it as a student to see how it looks. Just click on preview course in the top right and select as a student  from the drop down box. (You can do this at any time while creating your course too).

Then you will want to have a look in settings and see what you would like to include or change there. This is entirely your choice as there is no right or wrong thing to do here. you can also delete the course here if you are not happy with it and just start over.

The course card option just lets you put an image into your course like you saw in my examples earlier. This can help it to look more professional and finished. It is also what people see when they land on your home page so you probably want to do this to make it look nice.

The other options you can have a look at, but you won’t need to use them at this point.

The page building option will let you create a professional home page if you want to advertise your courses later rather than just send out one link to a specific course. Tip: You will need to click on the menu options on the left to change the Lorem ipsum holding text in the main pane.

There is also an option for you to drip out content to your students. This is useful if, like me, you have a course that is too long to take all at once. I drip my content out to my students over a 12 month period. This way they are not overwhelmed and are more likely to work through and complete the modules. You would need to upgrade to a paid option for this though (but it’s still only about £12 per month)

So there you have it. I have shown you how easy it is to create a professional online course for free. To start your professional online course for free just click here and join Thinkific today.
