A Bloggers Life For Me!

A Bloggers Life For Me!

A bloggers life for me. That’s what I kept telling myself as I started my first blog a few years ago. I knew I wanted a “job” that was going to enable me to work from anywhere and at any time of day or night.

I knew that I didn’t want to continue working for other people and being told what time I had to be in work by and what time I could leave. And I was always so ANNOYED when I was told I couldn’t have my holidays when I wanted them because it didn’t suit the needs of the business.

I knew there must be a better way of making a living and I started to look for one, and this is what I found…

Note –This post includes adverts and affiliate links which means if you make a purchase through any of these links I’ll earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It helps me support the running of this website and continue to publish helpful content. I use whatever I promote for my own business, which is why I’m happily an affiliate! Thank you for your support!

I found blogging. I had kind of heard of it but I thought it was just for travellers to show pictures of their journeys, or cooks to share recipe ideas. I suppose I didn’t really know what a blogger was at that time, or, more importantly, that they could make money out of it.

As I was doing some research online about how I could earn money from home (because this was my ultimate goal) I came across a guy on a pedlow who was talking about affiliate marketing. Okay, admittedly I started watching because you know, a good looking guy on a pedlow, well you don’t come across that very often do you?

But what he was saying resonated with me. He was talking about how you could make money online by selling other people’s products or services for a commission. This sounded great as I didn’t have anything of my own to sell.

The more I looked into affiliate marketing, the more interested I became. It seemed it was the answer to my prayers, or at least the answer to my problem of how I could actually make a living working from the comfort of my own home.

For those who have never heard of affiliate marketing this is briefly what it is and what it involves:

  • You buy something online.
  • You like it and it works for you. You want to tell others about it so that they can benefit from it too.
  • You check to see if they have an affiliate programme
  • You join the programme and they send you a unique URL (affiliate link) which identifies you as the referrer
  • You write a blog post about your amazing find and include the URL or affiliate link in the post.
  • A person likes what you have said and decides to try it out for themselves
  • They click on your link and get taken to the sales page of the product or service you have recommended
  • They click buy
  • The seller knows it was you who sent them because of the unique link that brought them there
  • The seller pays you a commission as a thank you for the referral

That’s pretty much all there is to affiliate marketing. Great idea isn’t it? The quickest and easiest way of working from home and making money online.

Although it’s quick and easy, like everything else in the world, if you are going to become good at it and earn lots of money, you are going to have to put some time into learning how to do it properly.

The more skilled you become, the money you earn. That’s pretty much the same in any walk of life though isn’t it? You need to practice something, get good at it and then you are worth more to someone as a skilled worker.

Affiliate marketing is no different. There are rules you must follow (legal stuff, like the disclaimer you saw at the top of this post and the cookie consent that you had to agree to as a visitor to this site). There is also a skill involved in writing a good blog post that might encourage someone to click on your link. After all, if no one clicks and no one buys – you won’t earn any money.

I realised this early on in my blogging career. To be honest, when I started out it was a disaster. I didn’t know how to get people to read my posts once I had published them. I was literally talking to no one, so guess how many sales I made? Yep None.

That was my first hurdle. Getting traffic to my blog to get the readers I needed to get the clicks I needed to get the sales I needed.

My second hurdle was how to promote the links in my posts. I wasn’t a proficient blog writer at that time and so I wasn’t following certain rules and formats in my blog or posts. Because I didn’t know how to structure the posts I was not keeping my readers interested and they were just bouncing straight off again.

The third hurdle was not knowing what products to promote. I didn’t know that there was a vast difference in the commission that people pay. To be a successful affiliate marketer you need to get paid larger commissions and consistently.

So for a year or so I failed miserably. But I was determined not to give up because I knew that other people were making it work. I knew if they could make it work then  I could make it work too.

It was then that I realised I needed some professional help. I needed someone who could show me how to do everything properly so that I wasn’t just spinning my wheels and getting nowhere fast.

I found Michelle, and my life changed, immediately!

Michelle taught me how to find affiliate programmes that are profitable where you get paid more per sale. All my affiliate links now return me 40% or 50% commissions.

Let me put that in everyday language for you…

You find something for $200 that you want to promote for someone. They pay 50% commission for every sale you refer. If you refer just 10 people that’s $1,000.

And that’s just one thing. You can find as many things to promote as you can handle. Let’s say you have 10 things that you promote and each earns you $100 commission. If you made just 5 sales of each that’s 5 x 100 x 10 = $5,000

That’s pretty impressive right? But Michelle is earning 10 X that EVERY MONTH!

She taught me how to structure my posts so that people stick around and read them (you’re still here so it obviously worked). This made all the difference to the number of commissions I made as people were actually reading the whole recommendation rather than just the first couple of lines and then getting bored.

I learned how to blog legally. There are lots of regulations in place now that govern how you can promote and advertise online. I was so glad I learnt this as I’m no longer in danger of getting a fine, eek!

But most of all, she taught me how to make my dream come true. I am now making money as an affiliate marketer for the first time. I can actually see my hard work and determination paying off as I receive my commissions each month.

Notice the recurring payments? Well it turns out you can find affiliate programmes that pay you each month when someone signs up for monthly payment programmes.
